At home blends for your crowning glory

I have been in the beauty industry for well over 35 years now and continue to address the beauty woes of thousands. In all these years of dealing with clients, I have realized that beauty cannot be categorized as inner or outer beauty, but beauty is holistic. It is to do with your body, mind and soul.       

As with your skin, keeping hair in good condition is also a combination of caring for it on the outside and nurturing it from within with a well-balanced diet and use of essential oils.

Browse through these wonderful recipes of mine to keep your scalp and lovely manes in good condition.

Dry Hair- Dry hair are rough to touch and thin or sometimes thick in texture. Susceptible to tangles, damage, break and split ends, the primary aim should be to replenish oil and moisture in the hair. The emphasis here is on conditioning.

The use of frequent and strong shampoo is prohibited for dry hair. Often a generous application of oil and massage is recommended before washing the hair.

Here are some natural, time tested recipes to replace chemical products.

Protein conditioner for chemically treated and moisture-dry hair:-

  • Castor oil- 1 tablespoon.
  • Almond oil- 1 tablespoon.
  • Glycerine- 1 tablespoon.
  • Vinegar- 1 teaspoon.
  • Protein powder- 1 teaspoon.
  • Sandalwood oil- 4 drops.

Apply on the hair and leave for half an hour. Then shampoo out. Use a conditioner.

Special massage oil:-

  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil.
  • 1 tablespoon castor oil.
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil.
  • 1 teaspoon lavender essential oil.

Warm the oil by placing the container in a bowl of hot water. Massage into the scalp. Wrap a hot towel around your hair. Leave it on for half an hour and then shampoo.

To make your shine, use a few drops of ylang ylang, spread on the palm of your hands and apply to freshly washed dry hair. It gives your hair an instant shine and keeps split ends away. It also lends an exotic and sensuous smell to your hair.

Oily hairOily hair look dull, lack body and will not hold a style. Avoid using harsh shampoos, cleanse hair and scalp with a mild shampoo often to remove excess greasiness. Patchouli essential oil is good for an oily scalp. So before you shampoo your hair, I would advise you to take 1 tablespoon of water and 10 drops of patchouli oil, with your fingers apply this over your scalp and hair. Now, shampoo your hair as you normally do.

After this apply the following toning lotion to the scalp:-

Toning lotion

  • Malt vinegar- 1 tablespoon.
  • Water- 1 glass.
  • Patchouli- 3 drops.

Rinse through your scalp and hair. Massage your scalp regularly with this toning lotion.

Normal hair- Normal hair are healthy and have a lot of bounce and shine. An occasional hot oil treatment will keep them in good condition.

Hot oil treatment:-

  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil.
  • 1 tablespoon castor oil.
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil.
  • 2 drops of rosemary.


Mix together and massage into the scalp and hair for a few minutes. Wrap with a hot towel for 20 minutes and then shampoo.
